South Korean actors Kim Go Eun and Park Jinyoung return to the small screen with season 2 of the widely popular Korean drama, Yumi’s Cells. The series premiered on June 10, 2022. It picks up where season 1 left off. Yumi and Woong [Ahn Bo Hyun] have broken up. The first episode shows how Yumi and her cells try to move on from the emotional parting with Woong. Yoo Babi [Park Jinyoung], who was one of the most heart-throbbing encounters in season 1 and the second lead, now takes the lead role as the new love interest. While episode 1 deals with the post-heartbreak moments, episode 2 takes off smoothly with Babi confessing his desire to date Yumi, and Yumi rejecting but starting to warm up to him later.

Yumi’s Cells Season 2 Review: Kim Go Eun and Park Jinyoung kick off the quirky romantic story with heartbreak, healing and experiencing new love

Kim Go Eun fits back into her character Kim Yumi. She is just like every other modern woman who is dealing with life and emotions one step at a time. Having just faced a breakup, her emotions are all over the place. What makes her character relatable is that the makers have not shown anything superficial in the drama. Like a person who goes through the stages from impulse buying to eating sweet junk food, to even crying after getting drunk, Yumi does it all. When she is proposed to by Yoo Babi, she initially rejects him but later she starts getting curious about him.

The chemistry between Kim Go Eun and Park Jinyoung is adorable to look at. From his first drama until now, the GOT7 singer and actor has matured as an artiste altogether. He brings the most charming personality with Yoo Babi. Kim Go Eun brings out the innocence and poise of Kim Yumi brilliantly. This stage where both Yumi and Babi are at fills the situation with slight angst. There is potential for something heartfelt and meaningful, but at the same time, there is apprehension from Yumi’s side owing to her recent breakup.

When the drama title has ‘cells’, then has to discuss the quirky animated cells. Yumi’s cells are a bunch of dramatic cells which highly resonate with the audience. There is a cell for every emotion, and often times they come together in a common interest – the current one being Yoo Babi. The cells have their own quirky personality. Each emotion that the cell is responsible for is shown in a comical way with occasional exaggerations. The cells liking to disliking to liking Babi back, the hearts that flutter around when Yumi grows curious about Bobby, raining in the area when Yumi cries, all of these animated scenes make the drama more light-hearted to watch. There is an adequate dose of comedy and intrigue, with comedy occasionally stealing the scene.

If episode 2 is anything to go by, their relationship might move to the next phase soon perhaps at a brisk pace.
